Lewan attended Western Michigan University from 2009-2012 and played for the WMU Broncos football team. As a junior in 2011, he started all 13 games at left tackle and won first-team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) honors. As a senior in 2012, he started all 13 games at left tackle and was named first-team All-MAC and second-team All-American by ESPN.
