Deoriatal is the first significant stop on the trek. The lake is situated at 7,800 feet above sea level. The Chaukhamba massif can be seen just a few hundred yards away. Its reflection is captured in the lake’s crystal-like waters. It is pretty striking. It is rich in myths. According to legend, five brothers of the Mahabharata were once thirsty and came to the waters at Deoriatal. They had to face a test for wisdom. The most peaceful memories of a trek are made here by spending the night camping under star-dappled skies. The extensive meadows, which turn into snowfields on the way to Chopta, are next in line. The trail continues up, with great peaks like Chaukhamba, Kedar, and Bandarppoonch visible as one goes higher. These magnificent features of Garhwal Himalayas promise more to be elucidated starting at Chandrashila’s zenith. So the motivation is never lost. One continues to the Tunganath temple summit stretch.
